How much electricity do the world's data centres use?

The IEA estimates data centres used about 415 TWh in 2024, around 1.5% of global electricity src. In its Base Case that more than doubles to about 945 TWh by 2030, slightly more than Japan's entire electricity consumption today src.

Where is it used?

The US accounted for about 45% of data centre electricity in 2024, China 25% and Europe 15% src.
