Why is Slough Britain's data centre capital?

In 2024, data centres in Slough used 1.3 TWh of electricity src. That is 65% of all grid electricity consumed in the town and 29% of all data centre electricity in Great Britain, according to the government's first official local breakdown src.

Why Slough?

Slough sits just west of London and close to Heathrow, with dense fibre routes into the capital and the large, industrially zoned Slough Trading Estate. Data centres want low latency to the City, plentiful power connections and land that's already approved for industrial use. Slough has all three.

How does it compare?

Nearby Hillingdon (Hayes and Stockley Park) now uses 28% of its electricity on data centres src, and Tower Hamlets (Docklands) 18% src. London and the South East together account for 77% of GB data centre electricity src.

How many homes is that?

1.3 TWh is about the annual electricity of 520,000 typical UK homes at 2,500 kWh each src.
